Lucy Worsley is one of television's most distinctive and pioneering historians, whose unique blend of personal, playful and interrogative storytelling has transformed the way history is told. Her training as a professional curator brings exceptional depth to her broadcast work, which is characterised by immersion in primary sources and the fabric of day-to-day life.
Female stories have been at the heart of Lucy’s TV work over the last 15 years. By reframing major historical events through the lens of women’s experiences, she has been widely praised for restoring voice and agency to figures long marginalised by conventional narratives of history. Her biographical documentaries on Jane Austen and Agatha Christie brought those iconic figures vividly to life as complex women, while Royal Bodies and Tales from the Royal Bedchamber offered a refreshingly human perspective on British monarchs through the lens of health, intimacy, and private life.
Her flair for immersive storytelling culminated in Six Wives with Lucy Worsley, which placed her at the heart of the action to re-examine the story of Henry VIII’s wives. She employed the same technique in her powerful drama-documentary on the Suffragettes, which won the BAFTA for Specialist Factual in 2019.
Subsequent films have spanned both history and the arts, including A Very British Murder, A Very British Romance, Blitz Spirit, History’s Biggest Fibs, and Killing Sherlock. In 2023, she stepped into a new role as quiz host on Puzzling for Channel 5, and most recently returned with a second series of Lucy Worsley Investigates, re-examining some of the most dramatic episodes in British history.
A prolific and bestselling author, Lucy has written numerous acclaimed works of non-fiction as well as historical fiction for children. Her biography of Agatha Christie further cemented her reputation as a leading cultural historian, and her forthcoming memoir reflecting on 21 years at Historic Royal Palaces will be published in autumn 2026. Her BBC podcast Lady Killers, exploring historic female criminals through a feminist lens, was named one of the BBC’s most downloaded podcasts in both 2022 and 2024.
Lucy was appointed OBE in 2018 for services to history and heritage, following 21 years at Historic Royal Palaces, where she served as Chief Curator.
A captivating and highly experienced live performer, Lucy regularly plays sell-out shows across the UK with her one-woman shows on Jane Austen and Agatha Christie and has led cultural tours and cruises worldwide. As a keynote speaker, she combines scholarship with wit and accessibility, speaking on figures ranging from Agatha Christie and Queen Victoria to the hidden histories of domestic life explored in her talks Jane Austen at Home and If Walls Could Talk.
